10 Prompt Engineering Tips for Better AI Images

1. Be Descriptive, Not Vague

Bad: "A landscape" Good: "A misty mountain valley at dawn with pine trees and a winding river, volumetric fog, golden hour lighting"

The more specific you are, the better the AI understands your vision.

2. Describe the Style

Tell the AI what artistic style you want:

  • "oil painting style, thick brushstrokes"
  • "professional photography, 85mm lens, shallow depth of field"
  • "anime style, cel shading, vibrant colors"
  • "3D render, octane render, subsurface scattering"
  • 3. Mention Lighting

Lighting transforms an image. Include lighting descriptions:

  • "dramatic chiaroscuro lighting"
  • "soft diffused morning light"
  • "neon rim lighting, cyberpunk"
  • "golden hour, warm tones"
  • "studio lighting, three-point setup"
  • 4. Specify Quality Modifiers

Add quality boosters at the end of your prompt:

  • "highly detailed, 8k, sharp focus"
  • "masterpiece, best quality, professional"
  • "trending on artstation" (for artistic styles)
  • "award-winning photography" (for photos)
  • 5. Use Negative Prompts

Tell the AI what to avoid. Common negative prompt items:

  • "blurry, low quality, distorted, deformed"
  • "text, watermark, signature"
  • "ugly, bad anatomy, bad hands"
  • Renderella auto-applies a default negative prompt, which you can customize in Settings.

    6. Control Composition

Describe how elements should be arranged:

  • "close-up portrait, centered"
  • "wide shot, bird's eye view"
  • "rule of thirds, subject on left"
  • "symmetrical composition"
  • "dynamic angle, low camera perspective"
  • 7. Layer Your Prompt

    Structure your prompt in layers:

  • Subject: What is the main focus?
  • Setting: Where is it?
  • Style: What does it look like?
  • Mood: What feeling should it evoke?
  • Technical: Quality, camera, lighting
  • Example: "A cyberpunk samurai (subject) standing on a rainy Tokyo rooftop (setting), anime style with neon colors (style), intense and dramatic mood (mood), highly detailed, sharp focus, volumetric lighting (technical)"

    8. Use Snippets for Consistency

Create Renderella Snippets for your go-to style modifiers. For example:

  • #cinematic - "cinematic shot, dramatic lighting, film grain, 35mm"
  • #anime - "anime style, cel shading, vibrant colors, trending on pixiv"
  • Type # in your prompt to insert them instantly.

    9. Iterate and Refine

Don't expect perfection on the first try:

  • Start with a basic prompt and a fast model (Nano Banana)
  • See what the AI interprets
  • Add more specific details based on what's missing
  • Try different models for different styles
  • Use the seed value to reproduce and refine good results

10. Study What Works

Browse the Renderella Community Gallery. When you find images you love, check the prompt and model used. You'll quickly develop an intuition for what works.
